How to Use Jumper Leads

Using jumper leads, also known as jump leads or booster cables, is a common and essential skill for anyone who owns a car or regularly works on vehicles. Jumper leads are used to start a car that has a dead battery or to provide power to a vehicle that is unable to start. In this article, we will guide you through the steps on how to use jumper leads safely and effectively.

Before you begin, it is important to ensure that you have the following items ready:

  • Two sets of jumper leads
  • Two pairs of insulated gloves
  • Insulated pliers
  • A pair of safety goggles

Now, let’s dive into the step-by-step process of using jumper leads:

Step 1: Park the vehicles

Ensure that both vehicles are parked on a flat, level surface and that the engines are turned off. It is also important to make sure that the vehicles are not touching each other, as this can cause a short circuit.

Step 2: Connect the positive (red) lead

Start by connecting the positive (red) clamp of one set of jumper leads to the positive terminal of the dead battery. Then, connect the other end of the positive lead to the positive terminal of the good battery.

Step 3: Connect the negative (black) lead

Next, connect the negative (black) clamp of one set of jumper leads to the negative terminal of the good battery. However, before connecting the other end of the negative lead, place the clamp on an unpainted metal part of the engine block or frame of the dead car. This creates a ground connection and helps prevent sparks.

Step 4: Start the good vehicle

Once the jumper leads are connected, start the vehicle with the good battery. Let the engine run for a few minutes to allow the battery to charge.

Step 5: Start the dead vehicle

After the good vehicle’s engine has been running for a few minutes, try to start the dead vehicle. If it starts, let it run for about 10-15 minutes to charge the battery. If it doesn’t start, double-check the connections and try again.

Step 6: Disconnect the jumper leads

Once the dead vehicle’s battery is charged, turn off the engines of both vehicles. Carefully disconnect the jumper leads in the reverse order of how they were connected. Start with the negative lead on the good vehicle, then the negative lead on the dead vehicle, followed by the positive lead on the dead vehicle, and finally the positive lead on the good vehicle.

Step 7: Store the jumper leads

After you have finished using the jumper leads, make sure to clean any battery acid or dirt from the clamps and store them in a safe, dry place.

By following these steps, you can safely and effectively use jumper leads to start your car or help a friend in need. Always remember to take proper safety precautions and be cautious when working with batteries and electrical systems.
